Course: The French-Speaking World (General Education Tier I)
Number of Students: 130
Class Topic: The French Revolution
*20-minute excerpt from a 75-minute class.
Teaching Strategies: In this large general education course, I combine lectures with participatory activities that allow students to engage in small group discussions and individual reflections on the course content. This overview of the French Revolution paves the way for subsequent class meetings that focus on the Haitian Revolution and its impact in the Atlantic world. I provide students with tasks that encourage them to make connections between the ideals of the Enlightenment period and contemporary debates on citizenship, secularism and freedom of speech.
