Story Maps

screen-shot-2016-11-05-at-3-16-35-pmStory Maps are excellent tools that allow students to harness the power of ArcGIS, the powerful geographic information systems mapping software, to create simple but feature-rich maps. In my honors seminar, Outsiders Within: Constructing Contemporary Identities, we spend the semester exploring how racial, national, religious and gendered identities are constructed, using texts from the United States, France, Algeria, Senegal and Botswana. For their final project, students create a digital map that shows their reflections on the spatial dimensions of their own identities, the moments at which they have been outsiders within.
